The Flash vs SEO Conundrum

Ranking sites with a full Flash home page is one of the more difficult tasks in search engine optimization. I always try to steer clients away from it, but some insist. The content can be dropped below the fold, but this is not the most elegant method, and often the designer will object.

So what’s an SEO to do?

Search Engine Friendly Web Design

The way you design your site will affect your search engine rankings. You want to make it as search-friendly as possible in every way.

1. The quality of your site counts.

If your site is to customers in your category, search engines want to rank you highly.

2. Search Engines are computer programs.

If your website is laid out in a confusing and disorganized fashion, or if the links between your pages are difficult for a spider to find, your site will not be crawled optimally.

Alt Tags Can Help SEO

To make your site accessible to visually impaired people using text readers you must use alt tags. Search engine spiders don’t see images, but they do read alt tags, which means they can also be very helpful in the optimization of your site.

The danger in using them is taking it to excess and spamming. This is called “keyword stuffing” and can make your rankings sink like a stone.
