When you’re looking for free WordPress themes you quickly discover there are thousands, if not millions, of them online!
Some are better than others - a lot are rehashes of common themes, but then there are some beautiful and unusual themes that are freely available.
One thing to keep in mind is that if you find a theme you really like, make sure you read the comments about it and look at the star rating if available. Some themes, although fantastic looking, don’t work well or have bugs you need to be aware of. Also, make sure it will work with WordPress version 2.5+.
Below is my personal list of the sites I peruse when looking for a WP theme. Almost all of them have several up to 100 themes onsite.

Good tip re: reading the ratings, etc. The theme I’m currently using came only after going through a series of preferred themes that had some kind of little problem or issue that I failed to discover until after installation.

Yes, it’s good to do some homework on themes and plugins. Here’s an example of what can happen,
“I’m not familiar with what the protocol is for these matters but…many WP users have installed themes by XYZ. She has stopped updating her themes and her former website is down. I have tried contacting her w/o success. I was wondering whether protocol permits a theme developer adopting her themes and updating them (making them widget-ready for example) for the thousands of WP users who have wonderful themes like A, B & C. Many of us hope these themes won’t be abandoned.”
There is typically help for folks unable to handle a situation like this and mostly the word press open source community is available to support, but themes & plugins are not necesarily maintained. If not maintained. they can also blow up with the WP updates.

@Chris - you make good points. It’s best to stick with the popular plugins that a lot of people are using and that have ongoing support. I’ve had themes blow up with updates, in fact I’m still searching for a replacing theme for one of my blogs.

i do prefer permium themes as they stand out but allways good to find new freebies
@vipey - yes, you can tell the difference most of the time, although there are a few free themes, namely those by Top Tut and Small Potato, that are excellent quality.
