Gaping Hole in Online Marketing to Baby Boomers

When you’re designing and adding content to your web site, consider the age group you want to reach. If your target market consists of individuals 45 and older, take a look at the following statistics from a recent Burst Media survey. (Stats are rounded.)

80% of those age 18-34 say web sites are designed for them, but that percentage decreases until only 35% of the 45-54 age segment, and 20% of the 55 and older group, feel sites are designed for people their age. Lest you think older people aren’t using the Internet much, almost 50% of the 55+ users said if they were unable to access the Internet their daily lives would be significantly disrupted.

Fun Blog Widget

dunce2 The Blog Readability Test is a pretty fun widget. My goal on my web sites/blogs is to have them read at about the Junior High level. I’ll be changing the content on the one that got a Genius rating, I can tell you that!

One caveat - if you want to display it on your site, be aware that there’s a link included with the widget.

So what’s an SEO to do?

According to Wysz’s Popular Picks October 4 Google Group discussion on hidden text:

“When trying to figure out if a page may have hidden text that Google would consider malicious, start by thinking about why the guideline was written in the first place. Google wants to see what the user sees.” Seeing what Google sees

Keywords in Content

Content refers to the visible text on your page. I’m sure you’ve heard the adage “Content is King” and in my experience it’s true. Good content sprinkled with your top keywords will be instrumental in helping your web site rank well in Google.

Page Headers

After your title, your web page’s header tags are the next most important placement for your keywords.

Currently the <H1> tag seems to be ignored by Google, so make your first header <H2>. Your first header should not mirror your title tag. If your title is “San Diego Real Estate – California Homes for Sale” a good <H2> header would be “Homes for Sale in San Diego CA.”
