When I first started the Diva, it was because it was a requirement of my new job at Terralever in July ‘07. I had never blogged before, and was terrified of sounding like an idiot in front of a global audience (yeah, like everyone was just waiting to read my blog).
My first posts are pretty dry and stuffy, fact-filled but no personality to them. No one was reading them, either. The turning point for me was joining the Active Rain real estate forum in October ‘07 and setting up a secondary blog there. People on AR are really friendly, not afraid to comment, and not only made me feel welcome but ate up the SEO advice I dished out.

One of the keys to being successful in the social media space is to get involved, extend yourself, and help others. ‘Social’ means relating to human society and its members. When you get join one or more social media groups, be it Stumble, Facebook, or MySpace, to name just a few of the many that are online, you’re expected to give before you get.

Leaving comments on blogs can be a valuable part of your linkbuilding campaign.
It does not mean leaving “Great post!” comments on every blog you find. Most bloggers will delete those ASAP, as they should.
Leaving proper blog comments takes time and effort. The rules are simple enough:
- Find relevant blogs
- Read the blog posting
- Leave a comment that adds value to the discussion
- Keep your comment in line with the blog’s comment policy
- Make sure the web site you’re linking to (yours) is worthwhile

During some of my research, I came across some eye-opening statistics!
Blog Facts
1. 50 Million US Internet users visited blog sites in Q1 2005. That’s 30% of all US Internet Users and 1 in 6 of total US population. Source: ComScore
By extrapolating the date in #5 below, that number would now be (at a minimum) over 71 million Internet users visiting blogs.
2. 1 out of 20 US adults have created a blog and 11% of Internet users are regular blog readers. Source: Pew Internet & American Life Project Report
