Hot Trends for 2009

28 November 2008 25 Comments

Entrepreneur.com lists the following 7 trends for the year 2009:

GREEN
Decades in the making, this $209 billion market has its roots in everything from water to energy to food. Look especially to organics, clean energy, alternative fuels, and water reuse and reclamation services.
ECONOMY
What goes up must come down. Consumers are no longer trading up when making their purchase decisions, but rather trading down.
HEALTH
Thanks to the web and aging boomers, we know more than ever about our health, especially what may harm it. Sectors from exercise to plastic surgery are open for the entrepreneurially inclined.
MILLENNIALS
Want to bridge the generational gap? It may take a little research, but you’ll find opportunities in marketing, web apps, social networking, and anything that promotes culture and community.
BOOMERS
Representing the biggest wealth transfer in history, these individualists started the green movement and are ready to cash in on the environment, health, financial planning, travel and everything in between.
DIGITAL
The web holds endless opportunities for business pioneers, and almost everything you’ll ever do from here on out will somehow tie back to it.
ODDS & ENDS
The fact that cities are creating laws against trans fats and that companies are selling 100-calorie snack bags doesn’t take away from the popularity of bacon. Consider the Bacon of the Month Club and odd offerings like bacon mints.

This list may give you some ideas for niche marketing in the new year. Not so sure about the Bacon of the Month Club, though!

    Thanks a lot for the post. Now it’s time to think of competitive keywords within these trends. :)
    BTW I believe that there’s one more trend that should characterize a year of 2009. It’s a trend “Change” (thanks to financial crisis and Obama’s victory).

    SEO Diva ~ That bacon is creepy looking, but the 100 calories snack pack gives me a good idea. I think you might be on to something with this list you have here.

    @Forever Fashion – lots of keyword research ahead! I’m not sure how to use “Change” – any ideas?

    @Ryan – it’s certainly worth examining closely for ideas. Yeah, the bacon is gross!

  • http://virtualimpax.com Kathy – Virtual Impax

    Green is definitely the new “free” and baby boomers are obsessed with living forever – so I’m still trying to figure out how a love of bacon fits in with those two trends! ;)

    Kathy – lol :) ! Good point. I think living forever and bacon cancel each other out.

    Green is definitely the biggest trend although it will be interesting to see whether it takes a back seat when the recession really kicks in.

    We may see the price comparison sites receiving a boost as consumers look for the best offers. It could be similar with cashback and voucher sites.

    Once again I live in a place that really cares little about being green. I find that areas that have a lot of poor and uneducated have much bigger problems than being green.

    However saying that we are green in many ways since we have gotten smaller and live in old homes and streets that have not changed in years. We have plenty of trees, green spaces, lots of rain and wild animals. The fishing is great. Large variety of birds, insects, flowers, rivers, Bayous, lakes and some odd characters that could only call New Orleans Home.

    I wonder what will happen when these Boomers won’t be among us anymore! Lately I have been reading a lot about them…is it possible that they are boosting our economy so much?

    Well, I really haven’t made a research yet.

    Also of interest on that Entrepreneur.com link are the Top 10 lists for work at home opportunities, franchises, etc. In this ever changing economy it’s never a bad idea to diversify, even if you have what you consider a stable job. At any moment your job could be at risk and with multiple inexpensive ways to start a side business, you can never be too careful. You want to have something in the pipeline should you lose your main source of income.

    @Marketing Ideas – Green is huge! I agree about money-saving sites – retailmenot.com has become extremely popular.

    @Eric – Someday I’m going to visit there.

    @Web Talk – That’s a good question.

    @Eric – I’m curious about what you mean…

    @Forever – Thanks for the link to insights – it’s a great place to research new niches and search terms.

    @Tertius – I didn’t think “green” was that big until I started researching it joined with other phrases, and it’s pretty big. Give us a chance – we’re making the effort!

    @Igre – Yep!

    @Greg – Thanks for the ideas. Joined with this list, you could come up with all kinds of businesses.

    On the contrary, I think that when someone goes green, they spend a lot less, either in money or resources. So in this bad economy, it makes more sense if we all go green –> reuse and recycle.

    It costs companies a fair amount of initial outlay of cash to “go green” but in the long term they’ll save money and help the Earth.. so the question is, do they have the money to go green TODAY to save TOMORROW? I’d say in a lot of cases the answer is no, unless there are significant tax breaks from the government for doing so.

    All trends are rather interesting. As for “green” trend, I agree, that it is really complicated process of becoming “green” and not every company will manage to complete it. And overcomming of world financial crysis must be the main trend in economy, to my mind.

    The bacon doesn’t look too bad (I must be hungry!) but bacon mints? yuck!!! Thanks for the post – gives us something to think about. I do hope the green movement continues to gain strength and brings viable change.

    We want our world green. We are getting green but in the same time we produce nuclear weapons :(

  • http://www.gaarlaw.com Lafayette Lawyer

    Green is Good but expensive….but as Canon states – we sort of need green now or we won’t have the ability to go green in the future.

    I’m glad you put ‘Green’ on top of 2009 because whenever I read ‘green’ I think of two things: global climate changes and dollar. I hope things will get better for the ‘green’ currency this coming year. Thank you for letting me share my thoughts.

    Green is the way of the future for us here in the US. Europe and Australia have been doing it for 15+ years as far as construction goes. Maybe we will finally lesson the grip foreign oil has on us
