It is very important that when a search engine comes to index your site it is able to find the pages it’s looking for.
Many web sites lose out on valuable search engine traffic and suffer a loss of Google Page Rank when the site is redesigned or the page URLs are changed, due to incorrectly configuring redirects or omitting them altogether.
