A Twitter Ho? Oh No!
I have this nice little website about books that is just taking off like a rocket. So I decided to get more involved in Twitter than my usual wont.
I followed a bunch of people that are relevant and got 12 followers back. Since it’s “important” to have lots of followers, I found a list of people “most likely to follow” me back. Then I signed up with a site that’s an “I promise to follow you and you promise to follow me” type thing, and now the site’s email is packed with Twitter emails from online marketers and get rich quick wannabees.
The thing is, not one of them has anything to do with the topic of my site, and now I feel like I’ve whored myself out. As a result, I’ve decided I’d rather have 12 relevant followers than 2,000 people who are following me solely to to ramp up their number of followers.
Twitter can be awesome for businesses; I know that, and in fact, will be writing more about that very thing. But the whole contest to see who’s got the most followers is not what it should be all about.

Interesting post. I agree it shouldn’t always be about a contest for the most followers.
I join some websites that offer automatic follow, and I get many followers everyday. Too bad, most of them intensely send me automatic spam messages, offering to join internet marketing network bla bla bla…I don’t think it’s good anymore
I have the same issue. After following a ton of people it has no longer become useful for me, except for SEO purposes. The only thing that has changed that some is the use of lists.

Yup having 12 relevant followers is better than 2,000 irrelevant followers. What you can do is focus on this 12 and build a connection with them that way it’ll be easier to get possible referrals from them.
I couldn’t agree more that becoming a “Twitter Ho” by joining those automatic follow sites is just leaving yourself open to spammers. Also, having so many irrelevant followers doesn’t increase your credibility, much in the same way that people on Facebook with 1000′s of friends are deemed to have very few real ones.
Brilliant post thanks, all the best. I really like reading this blog, it has a good location on my favourites bar! Shellie Stenseth
Hi,Hello as i so sherish this site, I wuold be very honored if you allow me to blog a heartful review about your webblog on my Webmaster Forum http://kh3.us would you say yes? Best wishes,
Looking at the current market scenario it has a lot to do with internet marketing and business. While being on twitter it allows business to expand through internet specially if you are working online.
I haven’t been able to find much use for twitter yet. I’m very interested to see why you say twitter is “awesome for businesses”. Looking forward to that post.

Thanks for the information provided on twitter, useful !
I don´t like Twitter for Internet Marketing too, but can we use it for seo/backlinks? How?
I can suppose that everything you’ve mentioned here about the Twitter can be also fair for the whole Internet – there is plenty of various information and much informational rubbish!

Yes I agree with you. But every once in a while I still follow those that are not in my niche to gain numbers.
at first i thought it’s cool to do that, but after getting thousands of followers in twitter that do not even bother greeting good morning to you, i backed out and made another twitter account.

I fully agree with you – but it shouldn’t be too hard to sort out, should it? Just unfollow people that are wasting your time…..
Or add a post saying you’re going to be presenting your wisdom to the world with a new account only and see if they follow your new ID. If they do, at least you’ll know they read your stuff!

I can’t trust such sad information about Twitter – it is so popular all over the world that it will never disappear – so won’t Google!
LOL as i was reading the post I remembered feeling the exact same way. I have around 4k followers and used programs such as i follow back (a few actually). I quickly learned that the followers were junk when I tried asking my followers a question and not one gave a response. I found that if people follow you just to increase followers they really don’t want to hear what you have to say anyway good post.
Kris,
If the only reason someone is following me is because I am following them its not what I’d call targeted traffic. I haven’t dabbled much into twitter marketing yet. Let us know more a couple months down the road.

I found a list of people “most likely to follow” me back. hehehe thats cool.
I can’t imagine my life without my accounts on Twitter and Facebook – these sites are very powerful means of communication and establishing contacts.
I agree. How does it really matter how many followers you have, if the followers are not even relavent to the business you are trying to make.
Thanks for the post. I think you have managing to bring one very important point about twittering: It is not about how many followers you have, it is about who can benefit you or your business at the end of the day.
I think facebook is more better than tweter
It is true it is important to have followers related to your business. For me, i use Twitter Match and type a keyword for example SEO to find all people which write SEO in their description or something like that. And wait them for follow you back if not delete them wih Twitter Karma.
Hello,
I have 200 followers and I only follow about 40 people…lol
Yes I have low figures but the 200 odd followers I do have I know are interested in me and what i do and the 40 people I follow know I am interested in them.
Tweeter is meant to help marketingb having stupid amounts of twitter follows could make twitter very unsocial

I am not SEO. But i heard Twitter is nice platform to increase traffic. I felt twitter is really boring and dull platform,How others are using it. I am not comfortable with it. Help me if it is really nice.
I am seriously considering unfollowing anyone on Twitter whose post location is anything other than “via web” for just these reasons.

Nice information. I think Twitter is very much useful for businesses . I’m very much interested to use twitter for business
Having a lot of followers on twitter means nothing if no one is listening. Follower programs, websites, and applications just get you people who also want a lot of followers. I suggest you look through your following list & dump everyone who posts things you are not interested in. You’ll get rid of spammers, and will improve the quality of the experience by having people you will interact with. It’s about the conversation, not the numbers.
(Another suggestion? Get rid of the spam comments on your blog. They don’t add to the conversation. They’re just using you for the backlinks.)
