Galiwumpus Means Top Google Rankings in Hours not Months

29 January 2010 44 Comments

I just read a great blog article written by a fellow Azima member, Ed from EightTrails, on getting top rankings for keywords that no one ever searches for.

It brought to mind the realtor that would crow to me about ranking on Google for terms like “Best short sale real estate agent located in Phoenix Arizona that will give you a discount.” He was never interested in any of the free SEO advice I offered him about ranking for keywords that people actually search for, because he was already ranking #1 on Google.

Using Galiwumpus for Top Google Rankings

Galiwumpus - Ranking on GoogleGaliwumpus is a made-up word with no search results as of this writing. I expect it to start ranking soon, though, so I’m using it to make two points:

  1. Anyone can rank for a term that no one searches for. Of course you want to rank for your company name, but this is not a huge feat if your business name is Galiwumpus Google Rankings. This goes back to my article on writing titles that give you better rankings for keywords that will both rank and convert.
  2. Spend a serious amount of time on keyword research. If you don’t, you could be missing out on a huge number of searches that would bring you traffic and put money in your pocket. Just because you think a search term like Galiwumpus is a good one does not mean a lot of (or any) people are searching for it. You’ve got to do keyword research. Start with the Google Adwords Keyword Tool – that alone will help you a lot. From there choose three to five keywords you think are most relevant to your product or service and concentrate on those.

As soon as I publish this post, I’ll start keeping an eye on Google rankings for Galiwumpus, and will add a screen shot when it ranks. I’ve wanted to try this little experiment for years :)

You have to keep in mind that the keyword has to be a “buying” phrase also known as Commercial Intent. Bing’s AdCenter provides a free Commercial Intent tool. It will tell you if people are just looking for information or are they likely to buy something (or click on Ads).

Good Points. Most of the time clients do the keyword research for us. LOL. And the are terrible at it. And they come up with most generic keywords like books, sunglasses, engineers etc. Makes my head spin.

  • Seo Diva (author) said:

@Sri Lanka – I know, I had one client who wanted to rank #1 on Google for “love.”

  • Ed Tankersley said:

I’m glad you enjoyed my blog post, Diva. Looks like your experiment yielded almost identical results to mine — top Google ranking within 3 hours for a nonsense word. In addition to the point we’re both making about optimizing for terms that people actually care about, the exciting thing in all this for me is that Google ranking actually happens much faster than we expected for a well-structured site.

Now we know that if your site isn’t ranking for a desired term, there’s either too much competition for that term or there’s a problem with your site’s structure or visibility to the search engines.

@Ed – it is pretty amazing that Google will rank something so fast! I’ve seen it happen before with off-the-wall phrases I’ve used. I rank #2 on Google for flakey people. Maybe I should be proud of that?!

  • Josh Tekniq said:

Interesting article. I had no idea they could do it so fast, I wonder how fast they reshuffle rankings for less popular keywords. My company’s name is Tekniq and it doesn’t seem to budge a heck of a lot from week to week.

    Hi Kay,
It’s nice to be #1 for something, even if it is only Galiwumpus. :) Sometimes it’s good to have a “confidence builder”. But in the end you’re right, what’s the point of ranking for something people don’t search for? Knowing what people are searching for is half the battle… ranking for it is the other half… and it ain’t easy. :)

PS. I checked your ranking and you’re #2 behind regator.com… you’ve got to beat them and take back number one!

Congratulations on your stellar rankings for Galiwumptus! :) This reminds me of the vague offers that you see frequently on webmaster forums that “We can get you ranked #1 in Google — guaranteed!” They don’t tell you what quality of keyword they can actually do that for.

Keyword research is critical. I admit that I learned the hard way when I optimized for keywords, ranked well and then got no traffic. Now I use Google Keywords tool all the time!

    Hi Seo Diva,

I also sometimes feel like banging my head in explaining newbies the same thing. They are over the world by ranking in google for terms which no one would ever actually search on google. I just tell them that the day they rank top 10 on google with mortgage or finance I will give them a thousand dollars instantly to make them understand .. lol

I did something like this a while ago with the term “doowopdiddy”

It’s actually a fun thing to get your friends to do, show them that they can set up a page on squidoo or hubpages, and get it to rank number one for an obscure term.

It helps them understand the power of SEO

I am currently using market samurai for my keyword research. I get keywords that are relevant, acceptable competition and with high commercial value. But the idea of looking for a keyword that has very low competition and slightly unknown is great especially for keywords for topics that is just about to trend up in the future.

Market Samurai is awesome – I use it quit a bit. You’re smart to watch for trends!

Very good advice. I had this happen to me when I started out with affiliate marketing. I chose keywords I climbed up the rankings pretty quick for and while that was exciting and kept my enthusiasm going, it wasnt leading to much conversion. Thats when I found out about the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and lo and behold, these keyword had very low search volumes. No wonder then! So Im glad you pointed this tool out, its probably the single most important thing for a newbie to know about.

p.s.: Since you posted about it now, expect others to rank for Galiwumpus now. ;-)

I’ve heard many internet marketers brag about how if you search for their website they’ll come up number one. I hope so. And for your Galiwumpus…number one. Anyone can get a number one ranking if you make up a word no one searches for. Yes, you are so right keyword research. What are your prospects searching for…

I believe it’s great to start out using long tail keywords to get more qualified traffic to your website. The traffic will arrive at a much slower rate but they deliver higher quality and possible conversions. Long tail keywords have way lower competition, it is much easier to target and constantly bring in nice traffic. To find many of those long tail keywords it’s nice to purchase a great keyword research tool. In my experience, visitors who arrive to a site through long tail keywords are truly more likely to convert into possible buyers.
