Bing Searches NSFW

17 June 2009 58 Comments

Bing safe search After my article yesterday about Bing the new porn site (or portal, really), readers suggested I delve into the Bing search mechanism a little further.

So now I must caution you about using Bing for work, until they fix this fatally flawed search engine.

This image shows the results for “girls” on SAFE SEARCH. The organic results are fine, but take a look at the related searches!

I then clicked on videos, still in safe search mode. The first video was of a woman in a g-string dancing provocatively in a bar. At least there was no hard core porn, and most of the videos were okay.

However, our research shows that people tend to move their cursor to where there eyes are on a web site page, and as soon as my cursor hovered over the video, the dancer came to life, along with music that left no doubt what I was looking at.

Want this to happen at work? Probably not.

Microsoft has cleaned some of it up. Safe search and moderate safe search don’t bring up the same images they did yesterday. They obviously still have some work ahead of them, though.

    Diva,

I took the time to watch the nice g-string video you linked to. Thanks!

    Okay, just kidding.

What I did instead was to Google “girls” and see what came up on the Google SERP.

Top listing was Maxim magazine. They must have some powerful SEO! That is an arguably great first listing.

But in the unified search — not in the video tab — I got a video result:

“Why Only Young Girls Should Strip”

This video features a beautiful but a-little-bit-older woman doing a VLog-style video. She let’s down her hair, takes off her shirt and…

It ends up being a funny video, disguised, initially, as a sexy one. But I would have been just as embarrassed if someone walked in during the first part of this video as the Bing / Myspace / g-string video.

Not saying I am switching from Google any time soon, but I also wouldn’t call Bing “fatally flawed” … Flawed, but I just wouldn’t say “fatally” :)

The line between “safe” and “unsafe” blurs on almost a daily basis. However, I’m not entirely sure all blame should be placed on Microsoft – “parental control” starts with the parents utilizing better education/tools on their own local PCs, or in their homes. Regardless, Microsoft has clearly lowered the bar on what constitutes graphic with respect to their own engine’s filtering mechanism …

This was at work, thank God I didn’t have the sound on and wasn’t browsing the videos; would have been quite embarrassing. Google has a decent search filter but all of them could improve as more and more children are using the internet these days. Regards!

  • Seo Diva (author) said:

Bing quickly cleaned up its act, but it’s amazing to me, with all the resources Microsoft has, that they made these mistakes in the first place.

This heads up is really helpful for Bing to improve itself. Why do you think non-work safe links tend to occur? Why haven’t people realized the public use of the Internet? Also, what is Bing’s exact definition of ‘safe search?’
