Bing the New Porn Site?
Microsoft has a serious problem. Bing allows easy access to porn right in searches.
Bing gives one minute clips of videos directly in the search window. Cool feature. Except they haven’t filtered out the porn. Any kid can watch it, and there’s no browser history on these for a parent to keep on eye on.
MSN supposedly tried to put a band aid on it buy making the boxes black, but if you mouse over them you can still see the video. Actually, I tested this (market research only) and the videos popped right up, no black boxes involved. One click turns off safe search, so that’s no protection for innocent eyes.
The only recourse parents have right now is to totally block Bing. Open DNS makes this easy to do.
Microsoft was so busy putting together their $80 million rollout of Bing, they overlooked a huge issue, and now people are actually blocking the site

Wow, MS really dropped the ball on this one. How could they have overlooked something so simple, but at the same time
so important. $80 million, just to get blocked. Now that’s a shame.
Good article. Curious as to if Microsoft actually overlooked the whole porn aspect of bing or as to whether functions how they actually wanted it to. Either way I’m sure there will be some Bing updates over the next couple weeks with better search filtering/ child safe searching etc.
Overall I have been pretty impressed with Bing itself.
Looking to forward to see how it ranks with it competitors.
Wow.
That is a truly terrible problem – especially for a company that is spending tens of millions on grabbing more market share.
The problem is – what do you do when you fix it? Will they do another multimillion dollar ad campaign — or so much as a press release — opening with “Bing: Now with 80% Less Video Porn” ?
That is, how are they going to easily notify people to un-block them?

Everybody in the office heard me laugh when I read your comment! You make a good point though LOL.
I consider it my goal in life to make you laugh (at Bing references only, apparently).
I dunno if you saw this but Microsoft apparently set up explicit.bing.net for filtering (though it doesn’t address my previous point). Here is a story: http://www.betanews.com/article/Bing-vs-Google-rematch-after-Microsoft-upgrades-explicit-filtering/1245084329
Take care
Dermify – I did see that, but it doesn’t fix the main site, unfortunately. That Microsoft rolled this out with these sorts of issues blows me away!
Are you really THAT surprised?
As far as I could tell the value proposition on the Zune was “we made it instead of Apple.” Makes the whole (B)ut (I)t’s (N)ot (G)oogle a little more believable, no?
In all seriousness I sat in on a session by a Microsoft SEO guy at SES – San Jose last year. They have SO much data and SO many moving parts that just organizing it all is a daunting task. If they don’t typically run into porn-related issues (i.e. people haven’t been using Live.com for video porn searches), then I can see it being an oversight. Like, whose job is it?
Seems like a pretty major oversight! Im glad you were able to carry the market research
Oops, says Microsoft! This fopah will certainly hurt them. Given the morality of society today, sadly, this may help their cause.

I cant believe that this is true. However, I know it is as I also did a bit of market research!
Porn queries on Bing are banned in India. I haven’t tried if they show unsafe results for normal searches. A kids safe filter is must for this feature.

I just checked it out and Bing prompted me with a notice that I need to turn the “safe search” off if I wanted to view those photos.

Ryan – good! Hopefully they’ll clear up all these problems quickly. It shouldn’t have happened in the first place, though.
That’s excellent news Ryan.

Bing is very cool and I think Microsoft will fix this bug, but it is a big oversight on their part. I hope they fix it soon.

$ 80 million to get blocked.
lol
I have to admit, I tried that feature myself. It’s nifty and it really “stands out” from other search engines.
I think it’s great that Microsoft came out with a search engine, but I really think they dropped the ball on this one. I bet large amount of those first visitors wont be back anytime soon.
maybe this is a good news for me
.
but this is also a issue for google ,chinese authority decide to take punishment to google for it’s porn in search result.
It does look like Microsoft has resolved this with their content filter which is set to Moderate by default. The filter has levels of filtering; Strict, Moderate and Off.
Strict – Filter sexually explicit text, images, and videos from your search results.
Moderate – Filter sexually explicit images and videos, but not text, from your search results.
Off – Don’t filter any sexually explicit text, images, or videos from your search results.

I think this is really very bad, they need to fix it ASAP otherwise they will loose the market share they gained recently..
Ya its really big problem, because on internet most of minors can watch these
type of clips easily and its not a good things for them. So soon Microsoft has to
sort out it..
No problem buddy check the bing again. Microsoft has solved the problem. Now everyone can search content easily without any hesitation…
I am disappointed with quality of search results and difference is little between their old obsolete search results and now.
Well what can i say..This is some news!
Good to learn that people are actually blocking the site..serves them right.
Hope its not so, i have been hearing that it may be a great threat to Google. If it is so, then it needs to change its tactics.
hmm…i think it better if parents use OPENDNS as a website filter…

I don’t this that it is really a pron site and i am sure that they will be clearing all this issues against them in near future. I have never heard that it is porn or something.
Its just a shame,
i have noticed that when i was trying bing,
i think microsoft cant make a good product at start they need to do alot of fixes on everything.

Yikes!
I know that a few days ago my daughter was searching for pictures of other teenage girls (to copy their hairstyles, clothing etc) and some nasty images showed up. I hope MS fixes this as soon as possible. I don’t want to have to keep shielding her from all this stuff. Even with filters, settings and blacklists this stuff still seems to get through every time. Sheesh!
Good Article… great to know these unknown stuffs.. keep posting
I’m Agree, We must block all content for porn, good info!

waw..r u sure about this??I heard the news about this and it seems bing still have many problems in the search engine system.for a porn fan sites, you may be better to use bing:)
good article, a shame really

Well That’s is the problem if changing many times. Microsoft already change search engine 2 times. First with Live. Now Bing. They already waste big money and energy for nothing. I just wondering why they don’t do beta and alpha test…
Ruris last blog post..What Is The Best Way To Make Money?
@Ruri – I wondered that too – for such a huge rollout, you’d think they would have tested it exhaustively.
well that is another reason why i’m not too crazy about bing, i tried using it and i end up frustrated… but i’m not giving up hope on it yet, it’s quite new, a little tweak here and there might do the job…
well internet make the life change. but its also create a very serious issues. specially porn or nude sites disturb the community. Microsoft being a king of this field must take the action to stop porn site. keep the internet safe for all age group.
I see nothing wrong with porn or minors seeing it. Its disturbing that so many people worry about it and want to ban it. Just because you do not like porn does not mean other people can’t watch it. Instead of freaking out about sex maybe you should tell your kids about it as it might prevent them from going out and actually having it. I would rather have my kids bust there nuts at home them getting a girl pregnant or getting pregnant.
I could care less for anything relating to sports or religions. Both subjects are boring to me as I really have no need for either one. Just because I do not believe in some type of god or dumb asses running around on some field/court does not mean I want those sites banned from the net. I just do not look at the sites.
Deal with it and maybe control what your kids do on the net. If you don’t want them looking this stuff up then be a parent and teach them or enforce them.
bing looks like a result of laziness meeting greed to be no.1 ….. and truly this is what i feel about bing at this point of time…. MS people made it for what reason i am not sure of it…. but bing is something that should not e brought out of the MS labs,..its good for the Staff there…
Wait a minute… I thought porn was good.
It may be to you Bart
I just tried searching for porn on Bing and came up with nothing. Bing had defaulted to a “moderate safe search”. I had to tell Bing I wanted to turn that off. Don’t blame MS for parents not doing their jobs!
Oh no. Adult content? On the Internet?! This is outrageous. If only someone could save our children from these evils … since their parents are too busy doing other things …
So they spend a ton of money building a rather nice search engine, then people start erupting when it does exactly what it’s supposed to? Fuck them. Let Bing go. It’s competition to Google, which means both will get better.
Well, Dave, the point is that it isn’t supposed to serve up porn on safe searches. There has been this outcry from commenters about parents monitoring their children, me freaking out about porn, etc. But the point is, the search engines have an obligation to make “safe search” just that. And Bing has since made it safe…but the fact that they spent somewhere around $80 million to roll out a defective product is still mind-boggling.
