Benefits of a Dedicated IP Address
Although Google says you don’t have to have a dedicated IP address, I recently had a wake-up call when I read an article that pointed out that most top ranking sites on Google have a dedicated IP address.
I had been lulled by the Goog’s assurances that they were not needed if the shared sites were not porn or gambling sites, although I always recommend them for clients (dedicated IPs that is). Once again, it’s hellooooo Kay, follow your own recommendations!
For those of you who don’t know what a dedicated IP address is…when you buy hosting for your web site, you share the server with other web sites. This means you share the same IP address. Large hosting sites often put many thousands of web sites on the same server (a recent client had over 72,000 sites on the same web server they use). The big danger is that some, or even one, can be blacklisted, or serve porn or gambling, which reflects on your innocent little site.
So the safest thing to do is pony up the $4 a month or so and get a dedicated IP address (you don’t need a dedicated server, btw, if the two terms confuse you). That way your site is the only one listed on that address. Besides the renewed opportunity to gain the first page in Google searches, your site will load faster, hopefully go down less often, and it it won’t end up in what’s called a "bad neighborhood."
You can use this shared hosting check tool to find out what other web sites share your IP address. It could be a real eye opener for you.

I haven’t noticed a dedicated IP making a difference in the SERPs I track, but it can’t hurt. Plus I would never trust 100% of what any Search Engine says…

Great article; I looked up my ip address and there’s 334 other sites associated with it. I did a little searching on dedicated ip addresses and found the above link which has a lot of great info from many who have the same questions.
I agree too that you need to have great content to get noticed.

I talked with one of the “Google Dudes” at SES in New York in March about that. I mentioned a company I knew that had in excess of 20,000 websites all on a single IP address. He said that it should pose no problem. Then I mentioned that if I had a blog and listed 10 of those sites in the blogrole it would have the appearance of being part of a linkfarm scheme… and he said, “Hmmmm, maybe”. SEO Diva you are correct I think to recommend that we pony up and drop the few bucks a month to make sure we do not get somehow associated with unsavory sites and practices. Unique Class C IP addresses eliminate those “bad neighborhood” possibilities. Regards !!

Thanks for that, I’ve just checked mine….yep, shared, still nothing too dodgy on the same ip.
I never imagined that having a dedicated IP address I can benefit a lot of things specially in google. Now I know.
Be back to read more great articles.
I’ve heard that the more ethical caring hosts realize this issue and try as they may to put the more unsavory “bad neighborhood” domains (obvious porn and such) with like minded sites on their own shared networks.
Think there’s any truth to this?

That tool didn’t seem to work for me. It just keeps returning my url only when I know there are other sites hosted on the same ip. After reading this post I am a little concerned about who else could be on the same shared hosting server as me. I have had much better luck with rankings for my newer sites that are hosted elsewhere.
I think this falls under the “can’t hurt” camp. Well, maybe it’s a bit better than that, but I’ve seen fine results with sites on a shared server. A couple of viral posts in newspapers or other high PR places can certainly overwhelm any of the issues of being on a shared space.
@Dennis, yes I think they do. Nevertheless, as competitive as it’s getting, anything you can do to get ahead of the competition is worth doing!
This explains a lot. I never really knew the difference till I read your post. Thanks for the enlightenment

I think a webmaster should opt for dedicated Ip address because it won’t cost a lot
and also save you from the bad neighbourhood
Good advice. I think its not right to be blacklisted when its not you who is doing some evil deeds. Does a website who owns an IP address for itself loads faster?
That is right dedicated IP is better. However it was not required until recent time. Want to be successful – switch to dedicated IP adress.
I own a shared hosting account and have been using it to host my 5 blogs. I queried the tool in your post and it returned with this result “Number of domains on same server: 0″. What it means actually?
The advantage of a unique Class C IP addresses is that it eliminates bad neighborhood issues. Unless you have complete control over the other websites hosted on the same IP address (e.g. you have a dedicated server which is hosting your own sites) it may be a good idea to have a unique IP for your site or blog.
I used to wonder what is the benefit of dedicated IP and why one should have extra to get this. But now after reading your post, I understand and as I am starting new blogs, I will start on new hosting with dedicated IP in order to have less downtime.
@Vanessa – Try the DomainTools.com Reverse Lookup. It shows 17 sites on your server. Since you’re with GoDaddy, you must already have some type of special hosting – usually there are thousands of domains on one of their servers.
@Keyword Research – try the DomainTools.com Reverse Lookup. It’s interesting that you’re getting better rankings on one host than anther.
@New Yorker – very interesting! Best to err on the safe side.
If you have great expectations from your website you need a dedicated ip address. My web hosting provider was using the same ip across 770 websites. This is unbelievable. When you search for web hosting, don’t forget to look for a dedicated ip. Some web hosting companies offer a free dedicated ip with each web hosting plan. You have to be very cautious about this. Great search engine optimization needs increased consideration for every aspect that is involved with website development.
WOW! Thank you Diva. I just checked and there are 390 sites on my IP address. What are the odds that one of them is doing something wrong in the eyes of Google.
Way too many for my taste. I am going to get a dedicated IP address right now. This is by far the most important piece of info I have found recently. Thanks again. Adrien

I’m totally agree with this post a dedicated ip address is essential. It help the website during seo work..
Thank you for pointing that out to me. Actually I was a bit surprised to see exactly how big a influence it has.
Generally, having a shared IP address will not cause you any harm. However, there are a few cases when a static IP is required or simply an advantage.
And when i checked the domains that are hosted on the same server as our website it got 326 domains.
Thanks for the tool.
If you are going for big, dedicated ip is sure worth your money.

Great post. I’m definitely opting for a dedicated ip upgrade. I always had my doubts – your post just confirms them.
I totally agree with writer a dedicated ip really play the major role during seo work. If someone want to be successful, he/she should switch to dedicated IP adress.
Never Thought about It, Just Got to know that there are 400+ other sites,What i know Is dedicated servers are good cause its more secure and much faster, I would Give It a try If that $4 is worth it
If you have your own IP (not a shared one), you could not be hurt by your IP “colleagues”: – you will not be in the situation when your IP “colleague” send email spam, and you will be also will be catalogued as spammer; – you will not be in the situation when somebody else who share the same IP with you is banned by some internet services due to his/her fraudulently actions, and implicitly you are banned also.
Great informative post. Keep posting!
@laptops, please don’t get confused. Dedicated IP’s and dedicated servers are 2 different animals.
The IP’s may run $4 per month, while the servers will run you $100+ per month.

@SEO Diva: A little late on the reply….with my situation I don’t know if it’s the shared hosting causing the problem or possibly too much downtime by my web host. Regardless, when I can afford it I would like to get dedicated ip’s for all of my sites. If you want to earn trust with the search engines, you don’t want to risk being associated with any of the wrong kind of sites.
Your article does make sense. You have got logic that certainly proves your point. And BTW around 4$ a month is not a big deal when you can make many times more than this by using dedicated IP.
Thanx for this post SEO Diva. It never occurred to me before that I should have a dedicated IP. Now I think I will go for it.

I am really shocked to search my domain on it and I found many many dirty domains on the server(I am not talking about my current domain with which I am doing this comment). I think it is needed to shift the domain somewhere else or to upgrade it to dedicated I.P. Thanks for your full of information post because it can have very bad effect as seo perspective.
I think the key point here the reputation of the hosting company. Personally, I have managed to avoid ISP’s that host porn/gambling sites. I don’t disagree with the use of dedicated IPs (I use them to separate my sites when I interlink) but in the first instance: look for ISP’s that are whiter than white!

Thanks for your informative article!Your article answered all of my question! Now i am thinking to get dedicated IP as the article suggest!
hi Kay,
I’ve read other bloggers recently who think a shared address may hurt on the serps. I’m not really sure, but if a dedicated ip address means your site will load quicker, that is what matters I think. Why lose a potential sale because the prospect clicks away instead of waiting for the site to load? For this reason, I think if one has a serious site, dedicated is the way to go!

Excellent post, never thought about getting a dedicated IP.
Interesting, I would have never of thought that having a dedicated IP mattered so much – or is it because the sites that require more resources (dedicated servers) come with the dedicated IP. Maybe it’s just the fact that they’re so unique and popular they get the high rankings?
@firefly – High rankings come from a combination of things. Sites with high traffic counts tend to do better, that is true. But even smaller sites can do well in the SERPs if they are set up right and answer a need.

I think the need of dedicated IP is on the same way when your site going to be famous or high ranked by google.
The more higher your web rank, the more you need a dedicated IP. Sharing IP for high traffic web is high risk.
So, you’d better to have a dedicated one.
Just my two cents.

Dedicated IP address, I didn’t know about it before. I have checked my domain, there are 78 websites. From the names I guess there are no porn sites, hopefully. But I am going to think about getting a dedicated IP address. It’s worthed anyway.
