Track Blog Scrapers That Steal Your Content

image Awhile back I wrote a blog post about content scrapers. Now I’ve come across a cool tool for tracking the scrapers and getting a link back from them (for what it’s worth).

From Daily SEO Tip:

Tracer (tip credit to SEOmoz.org) is a free tool that inserts a short piece of code to your pages. If any part of your page is copied, it adds a link back to your site to the copied content. Of course, the link might be manually removed but most thieves never care to.

It’s easy to use – just go to the site, register, and type in your URL. You’ll get a line of code that should be put in the footer.php page of your WordPress site, just above the </body> tag. There’s a test button to make sure the script was inserted correctly. You’re done!

I’m looking forward to checking out the stats in a few days to unmask my blog thieves!

  1. I’ve not heard of this software before, but just had a little play with it and am going to give it a try. I don’t think it can detect stolen content that was taken before the java script was installed though, but its certainly a good step for tracking future content theft.

  2. Hello there,

    I truly enjoy reading your blog. I have written an eBook on Internet Marketing. I was wondering if you would be kind enough to take a look at my Interner Marketing eBook and let me know your thoughts.

  4. wisp says:

    Yeah, as was said by Emilio – in my opinion Google alert would be better anyway.
    It is because many thieves checks our stolen text after copying it from web-sites.. (

    This is probably a very good tool – it might help to find autoblogs which get your articles via RSS – I was looking something like that, thanks!

  6. Jeet says:

    I am not so sure if this will work. I heard about another one that starts with ‘fair’;

    It’s much better to just have link at the end of post pointing to the same post as ‘original’ source. Many lyrics sites do that. They also put their website’s scrambled URL to fight thieves.

    I agree with Emilio, google alerts or techrigy might be better at this :)

  10. I would rather file a DMCA than hope that I get a link back. Your content gets stolen and all you want is a link? That crazy to me. I put lots of effort into my work I have no time for thieves.

    On another note I wanted to let you know that I am here reviewing your blog for inclusion in Day 79 of our 109 Day link building Explosion. It should appear later today.
