Since coupons work so well offline (look at your Sunday Newspapers) I think businesses using them online will gain a competitive advantage over others. A coupon that has an expiration date can motivate someone to buy now for a discount, instead of waiting and maybe never buying at all.

Consumers still need goods for work, school, sports, etc. I think consumers are just getting smarter about how they spend and doing more research before making a purchase.
