Creating Your Online Persona

Do you know how to get extra SEO juice when you sign up for Knol, Squidoo, Zimbio, and other content syndication sites, or create a social media persona?

If you use your usual email, your real name, or even your online nickname when you sign up, you are missing out on some serious SEO benefits. For best SEO action just follow the guidelines below.

  1. Sign up for a new gmail account using your business name or keywords. For example, if you’re a Realtor, make your first name “Phoenix Homes” and your last name “For Sale.” If you’re selling blue striped widgets, make your first name “Blue Striped” and your last name “Widgets.” If you want your business name to be used for branding purposes, the same technique applies.

When you sign up for Knol, your gmail ID is what is used as your name. So every time you write an article about your area of expertise, the credit will go to the author, whose name will be Phoenix Homes for Sale or Blue Striped Widgets.

Tip: Use this gmail account for all your social media accounts - you’ll have it all in one place and won’t clutter up your personal inbox. This advice comes from the experience of one who currently has 3,000 unread emails in her inbox!

  2. When you sign up for Squidoo and Zimbio, you’re asked for  your desired username. This is when you don’t use your usual nickname of “amysgrandma2007″ but instead either a “keyword name” or business name.
  3. The same advice above applies to your username for social media sites. Since they are more “social” you may want to use a somewhat friendlier appellation, like “phoenix realtor” or “blue widget” as your username.

@Em Posts - no, but the link to your article will have your keywords in it, and your article should have keyword links to your site within the content.

Nice tip here - It’s something I had never considered before.

I guess the more instances you can have your keywords in important places - such as links, the better value keyworded links within the article become?

    Nice work

I had “accidentally” done something similar to your recommendation on my Active Rain blog many months ago, and the SEO benefits were very much visible afterwards. Your recommendation here firms up that practice for me.

I’m a have to go back and create all new profiles now.. That might take a couple days

  23. Posted August 14, 2008 at 4:33 am | Permalink

    Hi!

good point and advice, as this is probably one of the most interesting things many people heard in June at the SMX.

The thing is, just don’t overdo it. You don’t want to have 100s of “keyworded” profiles pointing to your site, as that would look highly unnatural.

Also, developing personas for SEO is a lot more than just signin up and populating a profile (that has no link juice) with your links. The clue is to develop those personas - just like real actors need popularity, so do these online actors.

    kind regards from Vienna

could take long to create new profiles , good post anyway!

@All - wow, this has been a huge response to this post - I think because it is a very valuable tip. Pay attention to Christoph’s comments, too, because he’s the King of this. My technique has been to create just 1 persona per client, using a top keyword phrase, and use it judiciously. No going crazy!

@Christoph - thanks so much for your comments. Your pointers are well taken.
