Cheap Domain Names Harder to Find Thanks to Yahoo
Yahoo Domain Name Renewal Sky High!
Yahoo increased the renewal cost of domains to $34.95 effective July 1, 2008.
This is a huge increase from the $8.95 to initially register a domain. Considering the cheap price of domains elsewhere, you have to wonder why Yahoo would make such a move.
This is one way fill the coffers quickly at the risk of losing a certain percentage of customers. There are many Mom and Pop businesses who are set up for automatic renewal, may not realize that is a sky high price, or don’t know how to transfer their domain to another registrar. Besides, for those who only have one domain name, it may not seem worth the effort to make the change.
Following up on a rumor that Register.com has raised their prices, I went to their web site and learned they are charging $35 for a new domain name.
Back in the day I was a prisoner of Network Solutions when they charged $35 and made it extremely difficult to transfer away to a less expensive registrar. Their price is still no bargain at $34.95 for a one year registration.
I buy (and renew) my domains at GoDaddy for $9.99, using a Dealtaker coupon code which brings them down to $6.95. Since I have over 100 domains registered I need to keep the price as low as possible. GoDaddy also offers privacy, which means my name, address, phone number and email are not displayed in the WhoIs database for the entire world to see.
When looking for domain names, you may want to check out Bustaname and NameBoy. They both offer great tools for finding domain names, and offer good prices on registration through various domain registrars.

Yahoo is in trouble, it revenues for ads and value added services is not there for a high flyer. It gets back to the quality of the searches and the desire to soak their cleints. The real estate searches are so inferior its hard to understand why it works.

Holy cow that is a huge jump. I still have 2 domains with yahoo, the other 2 are with godaddy. I think it is time to move those other two. I hadn’t seen this so thanks for the heads up.

Couple of months back Yahoo introduced cheap domain name registration costing $2 but when I went on to see the renewal cost, it was as high as $30 odd. They’ve perfect trap for minnows.

The fact that Yahoo is raising their domain renewals to such a high level is unbelievable. Apparently, they must feel comfortable that their new business model will work.
I find it absolutely unbelievable that Yahoo would raise their domain renewals so dramatically.

@Ashley – a nice thing about GoDaddy is you can transfer domains for $6.99 and get a one year extension.

@Tom – it surprised me too, but as Eric said, they need revenue and this will be huge for them.
I agree that the jump in renewal pricing on the part of Yahoo! seems like that of a monopolist or, the local cable+phone company that wants to give you a great deal on the first year of packaged service, while being extremely coy about the sky-high pricing in year 2 and onward.

yahoo renewed my domains i had no idea it would cost $35 dollars. They have already charged my account. Is there anything i can do to get my money back.
Why would anyone use Yahoo when GoDaddy is on $8.95 and sometimes less if you find a coupon code.

I think your right. Yahoo figures most people do not look and pay bill and they never know. I also think alot of people think it will be hard to switch domain name and just pay the bill. Every company pays the same amount for a domain name so anything over $12 is alot in my mind. Most are around 9 or $10 and the ones that offer them lower will charge you more when you renew.
