Happy Birthday Google! – September 27, 2007
Today is Google’s 9th birthday, and the Google logo is sporting a cute piñata in celebration. It’s colorful and filled with goodies if you can crack the code with
your link bat bait.
It’s been nearly a decade since Google changed the Internet landscape with its algorithmic determination of which web sites are most relevant to a search query. Creating new services and enhancements, Google has Yahoo, MSN and Ask struggling to maintain even a semblance of keeping up. Monopolizing the Internet, Google’s motto of “Do No Evil” is being questioned, and I’m reminded that “Absolute power corrupts – absolutely.”
Privacy issues abound to the point that Big Brother looms. Google can see the cat in my window, a Chinese submarine that the military couldn’t locate, and way too much of my personal information, which is happily revealed to anyone who chooses to google me look me up. They are even trying to control the way I use the Google name in private conversations and blogs.
Will Google cross over to the dark side, or will they be a force for good?
