Your choice of keywords can make your site soar in the search engines or plummet. Not only that, the wrong keywords can make your site rank #1 in Google yet bring no traffic at all.
Let me give you an example. Your site sells knit baby booties. You can easily rank in Google for “adorable baby tootsie covers.” Is it a common search term? No. Will it bring you any business? Highly unlikely. This example may seem ludicrous, but web site owners do this all the time.
Another mistake is to completely omit any keyword phrases - “Our elegant solutions will streamline your process and enhance the viability of your vision.” I have seen complete websites with this type of language - not once using words that would give search engines an idea of what they’re actually selling.
A keyword-rich sentence, on the other hand, gives search engines plenty of reasons to rank your site - “Our affordable hosting plans include a shopping cart, making it easy for you to upload your e-commerce web site and start selling your products immediately.”
Solutions:
- Take a good look at what your site is all about.
- Write it down in real English - the kind we all speak.
- If you were looking for your site, which of those words would you use?
- Keep in mind the average searcher uses 3- to 4-word phrases.
- Research those words and phrases with Google’s Keyword Tool.
- Use those keywords and phrases sensibly on your site - don’t spam.
