To make your site accessible to visually impaired people using text readers you must use alt tags. Search engine spiders don’t see images, but they do read alt tags, which means they can also be very helpful in the optimization of your site.
The danger in using them is taking it to excess and spamming. This is called “keyword stuffing” and can make your rankings sink like a stone.
How do you balance making your site Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) compliant, use the alt tags to your advantage, and avoid creating spam?
Solutions:
- Your logo should contain up to 5 keywords in the alt tag - the phrases should be different for each page. For example, “Web Hosting with Shopping Carts” - “E-Commerce Hosting” - “Affordable Shopping Cart Web Sites.”
- Product alt tags should describe the product, but don’t spam by using the same description in each one - you don’t want any duplication on your site.
- Spacer images should not contain alt tags.
